Types of Brain Damage

Brain damage often occurs after head trauma and by the time treatment can be administered, life-changing damage may already be done. There are two types of brain damage:

  • Primary Brain Damage
This type of brain damage occurs at the moment of impact when the brain suffers trauma. The brain is physically damaged by the blow, and neurons and brain tissue may be torn and destroyed. Side effects are often immediate and the victim may lose consciousness.
  • Secondary Brain Damage
After initial impact to the head, swelling and bleeding inside the skull may cause additional brain damage over several hours or days. Lack of oxygen to the brain and increased pressure in the skull can cause serious complications and even death.

If you or a loved one suffered primary or secondary brain damage because of someone else’s careless actions, John Bales Attorneys may be able to help. We have the resources to assist TBI victims throughout Central Florida, including Tampa, Orlando, Sarasota, and St. Petersburg.
