Procedures to Consider
After an Accident
-
Stop immediately
and be careful. Stay calm and do what you can within reason to avoid
blocking traffic. Be careful to not place yourself or others in a
position where they may be hit by another passing vehicle. Especially
at night, make sure that other vehicles can see the accident and avoid
it. Remember that most will be confused by this sudden event and will
not be thinking clearly.
-
Check
to see if anyone is injured. Give as much comfort as possible, but
try not to move any person who is injured.
-
Call the
police and cooperate fully with the officer and all emergency personnel.
Provide the information necessary to explain what happened, but do
not give your opinions such as assuming you are guilty or at fault.
-
Do not sign anything
from an insurance adjuster, if one shows up at the scene. Also, do
not give any statements to an adjuster.
-
Get the names,
addresses, and phone numbers
of all witnesses, if possible. Make a mental note of what witnesses
say, like, "That black car was flying."
-
See a doctor
as soon as possible. If emergency personnel think you should go to
the hospital, comply with their advice. They are the professionals
on the scene who may be able to best evaluate your condition.
-
Inform your insurance
company of the collision, as soon as it is practically possible.
Before signing or giving any recorded statements, consult a law firm
that specializes in helping those who have been injured in Florida.
