Phenylpropanolamine (PPA) Warning!

Cold Medicines Linked to Strokes
In November of 2000, the FDA took steps to remove PPA (Phenylpropanolamine) from the market after a Yale University study linked the chemical to hemorrhagic strokes. PPA was an ingredient in dozens of commonly used over-the-counter (OTC) and prescription medications that worked as a decongestant in cough/cold remedies and an appetite suppressant in weight loss products.

It is estimated to be responsible for causing up to 500 strokes each year, especially in young women. Consumers should read the labels of OTC drug products to determine if the product contains PPA.

What is PPA?
PPA (Phenylpropanolamine) is an ingredient used in dozens of prescription and over-the-counter cold medications as a nasal decongestant to relieve stuffy nose or sinus congestion and in over-the-counter weight loss products to control appetite.

Why is PPA considered unsafe?
People who are taking products containing PPA are at an increased risk of hemorrhagic strokes (bleeding of the brain which often results in death or disablement). It has been linked to causing up to 500 hemorrhagic strokes each year. Although the risk of hemorrhagic stroke is relatively low, the FDA was significantly concerned because of the seriousness of a stroke and the inability to predict who is at risk.

Are certain people at a higher risk than others?
The risk of hemorrhagic stroke was found mostly in young women, but men may also be at risk. A May 2000 study from Yale University suggested that women, age 18-49, were at approximately 16 times greater risk of hemorrhagic stroke within the first three days of taking appetite suppressants containing PPA than those who did not take PPA.

What are some warning signs of hemorrhagic stroke?
If you have experienced any of the symptoms listed below, you should consult your doctor immediately.

  • Sudden, severe headache

  • Weakness, numbness, or paralysis, especially on one side of the body

  • Total or partial loss of consciousness

  • Nausea or vomiting

  • Stiff neck

  • Light intolerance

What actions have been taken by the FDA to protect consumers?
The FDA has issued a public health advisory and is taking steps to remove PPA from all drug products. They have also requested that all drug companies discontinue the marketing of products containing PPA.

How do I know if my medicine contains PPA?
Products containing PPA may be identified by looking for "phenylpropanolamine" in the list of active ingredients on the label. If you are still unsure, check with your doctor or pharmacist. However, very few, if any, products still contain PPA.
