Serzone

Do not discontinue taking any medications without first consulting your physician.

Serzone® or nefazodone, was approved for use as an antidepressant for patients with severe depression and anxiety. The chemically unique formula of Serzone® was considered a pharmaceutical breakthrough, because it effectively balanced depression-causing chemicals in the brain while minimizing the typical side effects of antidepressants, which include weight gain, sleep deprivation, and decreased libido.

After its release, Serzone® was linked to a 300% increased risk of liver transplant or death for users. Due to this extremely elevated risk of liver toxicity, the FDA ordered Serzone®’s manufacturer, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Co. to add a black box warning to Serzone®’s label. The new label outlined the drug’s potentially deadly side effects. In June 2004, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Co. voluntarily withdrew the drug from the market.

Serzone® may cause irreversible damage to the liver. Symptoms of this damage include the following:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Yellowing of skin or eyes
  • Nausea
  • Dark urine
  • Abdominal sweating
  • Loss of appetite
