Ortho Evra®

Do not discontinue taking any medications without first consulting your physician.

Ortho Evra® is a transdermal patch that delivers hormones through the skin, for the purpose of contraception. The patch delivers a steady dose of hormones through the skin over the duration of one week. The patch was approved for women as an alternative to birth control pills, intrauterine devices, and other forms of birth control medication. The elevated levels of estrogen in Ortho Evra® have been found to increase some women’s risk of blood clots, stroke, and heart attack.

While all birth control medications can elevate these risks, Ortho Evra® was found to be particularly dangerous for women who are obese. The FDA has since advised that women whose physical conditions increase their risk of blood clots, stroke, and heart attack should not expose the patch to heat sources like saunas or spas, since this exposure can increase the level of estrogen released into the bloodstream. Ortho Evra® has since changed the label to include this warning.
