Top 6 Time Management Tips
With fall being a very busy time of the year, many people (yes even lawyers) get into the mindset that holidays are approaching and work needs to get finished quickly. We want to take a moment to slow down and get organized before the hustle and bustle begins. Time management is a vital skill to master for day to day activities, meetings and more.
Here are some tips to help you get organized.
1. Complete most important tasks first.
Make sure that you are identifying the two or three tasks that are time sensitive or have been lingering at the top of your to-do list, and do those first. Once complete, you will have the satisfaction of getting them done and can continue with other tasks.
2. Learn to say “no”.
Most people do not realize committing to too many projects can affect the quality of their work. Though it is great to have various engagements and tasks, sometimes declining new projects or tasks is ok to ensure current work is being taken care of first.
3. Devote your entire focus to the task at hand.
Make sure that you are focusing on the tasks at hand with your undivided attention. It is also important that you take breaks to help you create new ideas. To help focus, make sure to close any browser windows not needed and put your phone out of sight.
4. Create an outline to complete tasks.
Figure out how much time you would like to devote to each task before attacking your to-do list. Having a time constraint will help you not only focus but be more efficient with your work.
5.Don’t think of the totality of your to-do list.
Thinking about every little item needed to be complete on your to-do list will overwhelm you and make it hard to focus on one task at a time. Your list will not become shorter the more you think of all your to-dos. Take a deep breath and start on one at a time.
6. Create organizing systems.
Making sure that you are organized not only saves you time, but helps you recall important details. Creating a system that works for you is the best method when trying to become organized. You can use a planner, digital calendars on your computer or phone, or even organizational apps to help you be more efficient in organization.
